The link below leads to a very detailed account of one balloon builder's experiences.

The story covers the construction of the balloon shown above by a first time builder, Kevin Herschman. The balloon envelope was built for less than $2,000 in materials and about 200 hours of work over 22 days during the Winter of 2006.

The entire system cost less than $5,000 including basket, burners, trailer, inflation fan, etc. (These dollar costs are a bit lower than average as Kevin was a very agressive shopper.) The labor required is about average.
